About Beyoncé

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born in Houston, Texas on September 4, 1981. As a child, she attended St. Mary's Montessori School in Houston and was skilled in both dancing and singing, winning a school talent show at age seven. She later attended Parker Elementary School, a music magnet school in Houston, and went on to enrol at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and later Alief Elsik High School.

In the early-1990s, Beyoncé, her childhood friend Kelly Rowland and rapper LaTavia Roberson formed a girl group called Girl's Tyme, alongside Támar Davis and sisters Nikki and Nina Taylor. The group caught the attention of R&B producer Arne Frager who put them forward for the televised talent contest Star Search. After Girl's Tyme did not win the competition, Beyoncé's father, Mathew, became their manager and cut the original lineup to four: Beyoncé, Rowland, Roberson and LeToya Luckett. In 1995, Mathew left his day job to manage the group.

Over the years, Girl's Tyme began to perform as support for more established R&B girl groups, and were eventually invited to audition for various record labels. The girls had two short-lived record deals with Elektra Records and Atlanta Records, and briefly recorded with Dwayne Wiggins's Grass Roots Entertainment, before signing with Columbia Records in 1996. Girl's Tyme also became known as Destiny's Child, after picking the name from a passage in the Book of Isaiah.

Career

1997-2002: Destiny's Child

Destiny's Child released its eponymous debut album in 1998 and found success with the singles "No, No, No" and "With Me". The album spent twenty six weeks on the US Billboard 200 chart and won Soul Train Lady of Soul Award for Best R&B/Soul Album of the Year. It was certified platinum by the RIAA in 2000. The remix of album's lead single, "No, No, No", reached number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks and number three on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Writing's on the Wall, their follow-up, was released in July 1999 and peaked at number five on the Billboard 200 and number two on R&B chart in early 2000. Two of the album's singles, "Bills, Bills, Bills" and "Say My Name", were US number one hits, and "Jumpin', Jumpin'" hit number three on the Billboard Hot 100, with "Bug a Boo" reaching the top ten on the UK Singles Chart.
