About Khalid

Khalid Robinson, known mononymously as Khalid, was born on February 11, 1998, in Fort Stewart, Georgia. The child of a military family, he spent his formative years living in various locations including Fort Campbell in Kentucky, Fort Drum in Watertown, New York where he attended Carthage Senior High School, and for six years in Heidelberg, Germany. Khalid became interested in music at high school, where he studied singing and musical theater. In his junior year, his family relocated to El Paso, Texas, where he attended Americas High School.

Career

2016-2017: American Teen and Silence

Khalid began uploading songs that he had written to SoundCloud when he was in his final year at Americas High School. Setting himself the goal of releasing a song before prom, he contacted producer Syk Sense, who invited him to his studio in Atlanta. The single, "Location", was released in July 2016 and proved to be his breakout hit, peaking at number 20 on the US Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart and reaching the top 10 on the US Hot R&B Songs chart. A re-release, in January 2017, peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was eventually certified quadruple-platinum by the RIAA.

January 2017 also saw Khalid feature as a vocalist on Alina Baraz's single "Electric". He also contributed uncredited vocals to Kendrick Lamar's song "The Heart Part 4", which was released in March. The following month, Logic released the single "1-800-273-8255", featuring Khalid and Alessia Cara, which single peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100.

American Teen, his debut studio album, was released in March 2017, reaching number four on the Billboard 200 and number three on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart. The album was eventually certified double-platinum by the RIAA and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album, while its lead single "Location" was nominated for Best R&B Song at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.

Khalid's second single, "Young Dumb & Broke", was released in June 2017 and became a sleeper hit, topping the charts in New Zealand and the Philippines and reaching top 10 in Australia and Belgium. It also peaked number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 17 on the UK Singles Chart, as well as staying at number one for 11 weeks on the Billboard R&B Songs chart.

He performed with Logic and Alessia Cara at the 2017 VMA Awards, and won in the category of Best New Artist.

In August 2017, he was featured on Marshmello's single "Silence", which topped the Dance charts in Australia, the UK and the US, and was certified seven-times platinum in Australia, as well as receiving multi-platinum certification in several other countries.

2018-present: Suncity and Free Spirit

In 2018, Khalid's song with Swae Lee, "The Ways", was featured in the Marvel film Black Panther. A duet with Normani, "Love Lies", was featured on the soundtrack for the film Love, Simon and was released in February 2018, peaking at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100.

In May, he released a collaboration with Shawn Mendes, "Youth", which they performed at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards that month, as a tribute to victims of gun violence. He also collaborated with Billie Eilish that April on the song "Lovely", which was featured on the official soundtrack of the second season of the Netflix drama series 13 Reasons Why. Another 2018 collaboration was Benny Blanco's debut single "Eastside", which also features Halsey. The song peaked at number nine on the Hot 100 and reached number one in the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and Singapore, and number two in Australia and Denmark.

Khalid released the single "Better" in September 2018. The song became his first top 10 hit, peaking at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, and also became his second number one on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart and his first number one on Billboard's Rhythmic chart.

The following month, he released the EP Suncity, which debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 and launched the single "Saturday Nights".

In February 2019, Khalid released "Talk" – the lead single from his second studio album, Free Spirit. It became his fifth top 10 hit and peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as topping the Rhythmic and Mainstream Top 40 charts and reaching number two on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart.

Free Spirit was released in April 2019 and debuted at the top of the Billboard 200, becoming Khalid's first US number-one album. That same month, he made history by becoming the first and only artist to occupy the entire top five of the Billboard R&B Songs chart. After Free Spirit's release, Khalid was reported to have become the biggest global artist on Spotify with 50.4 million monthly listeners on the streaming platform.
